The NYSP & HPC is having a 100th anniversary of Fire Island State park on Friday June 27th @ 11 AM at Robert Moses parking Field #3. There will be a cake cutting as well as other activities. If you can join in in the festivities.
Fire Island State Park was the first New York State Park created in 1908. It was originally a series of buildings located around the Fire Island Lighthouse. After the 1938 Hurricane destroyed those buildings the LISPC rebuilt the park closer to the inlet just past the current water tower. The buildings comprising Robert Moses Field three which was originally known as F.I.S.P. or Fire Island State Park, were completed in 1940 and opened to the public.
Ferry service linked the park to Babylon untill 1954 when the Captree Park was opened with the adjoining marina and ferry basin. The first Captree bridge began operating that year and the Robert Moses bridge was completed in 1964.
