I was wondering if any of the older guards remember Jones Beach Lifeguards being pitted in Deep sea fishing battles between Sportsman? I found some articles noting the lifeguards were recruited as practice in a 70 yard pool. Tthey would strap on a harness and try to swim the 70 yards while fisherman with Deep sea tackle tried to prevent them from reaching the other end. Strapped into a fishing seat with deep sea tackle the Fisherman would either stop the swimmer, lose when the swimmer reached the other end, or have their "Fish" break the line. I heard practices were held in the Elks club on Queens Boulevard just North of the LIE, and also would be held at the Annual Sportsman's show.
